His Dark Materials CSP

  1. Costume - what is Lyra wearing in the photo below? What does this costume suggest she is doing / she is like as a character? Lyra is wearing a connected jean dress , with a bedroll on her back. This costume clearly suggests that Lyra is ready for her action towards what she is supposed to do and finish. Her costume is also quite messy and dirty as she does not really pay attention to how she looks. This is clearly subversive because most women care about what they wear and care about how they look , however , Lyra is more focussed on her mission.

  2. Costume: Mrs Coulter is always very smart and formal with red lips and styled hair. What does this suggest about the type of villain she is / her character? This suggests that she is representing that the colour red is the sign or evil and danger. This shows that she is a dangerous type of women villain. This also implies the fact that she looks very manipulative and formal .

  3. Lighting- What do you notice about the setting for where Mrs Coulter is torturing the witch? Why has the director chosen this lighting? (Hint: High key lighting is bright and low key lighting is dark). The setting is set in a ship full of dark colours , the witch is trapped in a miserable , evil room , trapped in a cage , showing that she is being tortured by Ms Coulter. The colours are lowkey lighting in that specific room , this connotes the mysterious colours and that is isolated and lonely.

  4. Actor’s position and movement- Look at the picture of Lyra (below). What does her facial expression tell us about the kind of character she is? What about her actions? Lyra's position of movement suggests that she is in control as Will is behind her running in the same direction as her , implying she knows what she is doing and is in the lead. The facial expressions of Lyra shows us that she is protecting herself by doing what she has to do within her mission.

  5. Makeup- Look at the make-up (and clothing and hair) of the tortured witch. What does the make-up tell us about the character of the witches? (Hint- think about how it makes her look unusual) The witches make up references that she is being tortured constantly as her makeup is all over her face , smothered. This makes it unusual for a women as it is supposed to look glam. This tells us that the character of the witches are in danger and most victimised in the series. She is also in society supposed to look odd and backwards as priests run the society.

  6. Props- Look at the props in these two screen shots (below). Why have the props been chosen? What do they connote to the audience? For bonus points, what is the shot type and why has this been used? The stick on the image below connotes that they are in extreme danger ad need protection therefore the girl has carried a stick with her. The image is clearly a medium close - up , emphasizing the fact that she knows how to protect herself.

  7. The witches and Mrs Coulter are also seen as powerful women. How are they represented as powerful? Are they seen as good or evil or both?

  8. Setting- Look at the three different settings below. Choose one or more. What do you notice about the setting? How are the settings connected to the characters? What shot has been chosen and why? The magisterium ship is linked to Ms Coulter as it is quite dark and the energy of that specific room where the witch is being tortured is really evil. Representation

Females are subversive in this extract.

    1. How is Lyra not a typical female character?

Lyra is not a typical female as she does not really pay attention to how she looks like or how she dresses like. Typical females are more weak and not in control however Lyra is in control. 2 . The witches and Mrs Coulter are also seen as powerful women. How are they represented as powerful? Are they seen as good or evil or both? Ms coulter is seen as evil and both powerful. She is represented as powerful as she styles her hair and does her makeup with her facial expression is more serious. The witches are represented as powerful as the witch stabbed the leader of the priests without any hesitation to save the witch in danger. How is Will represented? Is he a typical male character or more unexpected? How? 3. (Hints: think of him cooking and preparing the food, giving Lyra the bed she wants and allowing her to make the decisions) Will is represented as more of a weaker man compared to Lyra as he follows Lyra and listens to her instructions and what she does.
