Walk And Talk Mock

 01.1 -  What is Intertextuality ?

Intertextuality is when one media text refers to another media text . For example, Doctor who appearing in class.

01.2 - How are narrative features used to communicate meaning in the extract?

Propp's character theory states that a lot of different characters such as ; protagonist / villains / princesses and donors . This is when April is being subversive as she had pulled out two big black swords , something a villain would do. This clearly shows that April is different to what other typical young female teenagers would act like.

01.3 - How successful is the extract in targeting this particular audience group ?

Young people will enjoy this clip because they can relate to the coming of age , personal identity. This clip opens with April's mother and father arguing with each other because of the fathers concern for April's well - being . This is also shown when April's father had only come to the home when he cared for April running towards trouble. Young teenagers can relate to this as many young adults go through this everyday , arguing with there father specifically , this shows their personal identity.

Young people or teenagers enjoy science fiction because it provides them with diversion or escapism for their lives . It is interesting because it is about new innovations and futuristic weapons and aliens from other planets. This is shown in the clip when the different realms going from the young teenagers daily life , showing the audience non - realistic weapons and images like the shadow kin king and different other aliens . This is shown when the audience how another world looks like.

02 - To what extent do television programmes reflect the social and cultural contexts of the time of their production.

In Doctor who , television programmes indicates an all white , British cast reflecting on the 1960s Britain. Adding on with that , the cast was not culturally diverse. Susan subverts stereotypes of young female teenagers as she is intelligent and knowledgeable , stating things about the future which is not what a normal teenager would speak about. However , Susan reinforces the stereotypes of a young female teenager when she had been listening to pop music and respecting her male teacher , this was also very common in the 1960s - respecting men. In the clip it shows that when Susan was listening to her music the two teacher had come in , Ian had told her to turn the music down because it was giving him a headache , she straight away had apologised and turned it off.

Doctor who in the 1960s also reinforces stereotypes between men and women . In the clip it shows the male teacher (Ian) telling Barbara that she was overreacting or thinking too much about Susan being in trouble , saying that she was fine. So , this tells the audience that women were represented as 'dramatic' or 'emotional' and men as 'manly' and 'tough' compared to women.

In 2016 when class was made , Class was socially and culturally represented as a diverse ensemble cast including different ethnic characters. Women are also classed as superior which clearly reinforces gender stereotypes compared to the 1960s cast. For example , Ms Quill , she is in charge of everyone and protects a man , she is also quite aggressive  towards her job which would not be expected in the 1960s , as she is more of a dominant women. April reinforces the stereotypes of a young teenager , arguing with her father and having a broken home . The audience can relate to this as many young adults argue with their parents and not get along with their fathers at home.

Class also normalises disability and along with homosexuality as Aprils mother is a disabled mother and looks after April in a wheelchair and Charlie and Matteusz having a gay relationship with each other. However these normalisation subverts stereotypes as Charlie is an alien and has no absolute clue of the human world so he presumed that being involved in a gay relationship is completely okay and normal. Class subverts stereotypes also with Aprils disabled mother , with April healing her mother with her sword so technically in class's representation it is showing that disabled people are being portrayed as weak and are in need of feeling to look 'normal'.

In conclusion, the two csps (doctor who and class) represent fairly through their social and cultural contexts as both programs have a diverse range of characters that would appeal to a wider demographic.
